Episode 3: Joining Hands With a Demon

Episode 3 of My Demon begins right after Jung Gu-Won (Song Kang) saves Do Do-Hee (Kim YooJung) from an acid attack. He also tells her that he is a demon. Do-Hee later tries to persuade Gu-Won to become her bodyguard. She reasons that it would allow him to be near her and access his powers. Gu-Won refuses, not wanting to protect a lowly human.

Eventually, the body of Mirae Group’s finance head is discovered. Do-Hee informs Madam Ju (Kim Hae-Sook) that prior to his death, he had tried to pass her some information. Madam Ju dismisses Do-Hee’s concerns, but privately investigates the situation herself.

Meanwhile, Gu-Won begins to panic over his missing tattoo, especially when he starts to spontaneously combust. He decides to visit Do-Hee, and agrees to be her bodyguard. But first, he needs her to follow him on his search for a human wanting to trade their soul.

A demon’s dilemma

Gu-Won takes Do-Hee to a hospital, in order to make a deal with a woman whose young daughter is dying. Do-Hee realizes he is doing it to save himself, and berates him for exploiting vulnerable humans. Gu-Won dismisses her concerns, claiming he’s merely helping them.

We then see Madam Ju in her house, scolding a mysterious figure and accusing him of committing murder on top of other misdeeds. The person starts to leave, but stops and looks back at Madame Ju in anger.

Gu-Won reflects on Do-Hee’s words and returns to the hospital. He asks the daughter if she has a wish, and the child says she doesn’t want her parents to suffer because of her. The unselfish nature of the wish surprises him. He later meets Do-Hee and formally agrees to be her bodyguard.

Feeling a connection

Gu-Won heads to Do-Hee’s office and begins studying how to be a bodyguard. Do-Hee’s employees marvel over his good looks and mysterious nature.

Later, Do-Hee asks Gu-Won about his past. He tells her that he has lived as a demon for 200 years, and that he used to be a human. However, he is unable to remember that ‘insignificant’ part of his life. He adds that he believes God chose him to become a demon.

Do-hee goes to visit Madam Ju, and finds her lying dead. A grieving Do-Hee begs Gu-Won to save her, even promising to sign a contract. However, Gu-Won says he is unable to bring the dead back to life.

Family tragedy

At Madam Ju’s wake, Do-Hee looks on in shock while the rest of the family grieve loudly. She recalls the day of her parents’ funeral, and how she met Madam Ju there. Back in the present day, Madam Ju’s nephew Seok-Hoon (Lee Sang-Yi) comes to comfort her.

Seok-Hoon then tells Do-Hee that just before she died, Madam Ju had arranged for an audit of her company. Do-Hee has a tense conversation with Noh Soo-Ahn (Lee Yoon-Ji), who warns her that Madam Ju is no longer there to protect her. We also see that the assassin who tried to kill Do-Hee is at the funeral in disguise.

Do-Hee heads to the greenhouse to be alone, but is disturbed by Madam Ju’s grandson Noh Do-Kyung (Kang Seung-Ho). He reveals the family’s contempt for the late Madam Ju, and threatens Do-Hee. Fortunately, Gu-Won shows up, comforting her with his kind words.

A surprising proposal

The police later meet with the family and inform them that Madam Ju’s death was due to an allergic reaction to medication. Do-Hee realizes that someone may have killed Madam Ju to prevent her from discovering wrongdoing within the company.

Do-Hee tells the detectives that everyone in the family knew about the allergy, making them all suspects. Madam Ju’s son Noh Seok-Min (Kim Tae-Hoon) asks that the death be declared a heart attack, and they proceed to the reading of the will.

In a twist, Do-Hee is named the next heir to Mirae Group, under the condition of her marriage. Determined to find the truth behind Madam Ju’s death, Do-Hee boldly proposes marriage to Gu-Won.

What we thought of the episode

The episode starts slowly but gains pace as multiple plot points unfold. The intertwined destinies of Do-Hee and Gu-Won build anticipation for their evolving story. Madam Ju’s sudden death acts as a catalyst for Do-Hee’s revenge, leading to the initiation of a contract marriage with Gu Won.

The on-screen chemistry between Song Kang and Kim Yoo-Jung is delightful to watch. The episode shows their character’s budding romance, as they slowly open up to each other by sharing their pasts.

With the Mirae Group family under suspicion and Do-Hee’s life in danger, the next episode promises to be engaging. We can’t wait to see what happens.
